Henry David Thoreau believed that in order to live well, we must reduce the number of materical goods we have, otherwise, these things begin to dominate us.
I disagree with Thoreau's belief, Things will only dominate us only if we let them. The United Statesis what is it today mainly because of technological innovations which make things easier such as, Dishwasher, Calculator and Cell Phones.
But I can also see where he's coming from. There are many americans that let technology control them. For example, Math students go through grade school and they start learning multiplication and they realize it's hard so they start to use a calculator. Then they become very dependant on that calculator, and they cannot do math without it.
